The General Electric Company was founded in 1892 from a merger between Edison General Electric Company (backed by Thomas Edison's research) and The Thomson-Houston Company. Common GE Appliance Problems
Refrigerator Not Cooling
Compressor failure, coolant leak, frozen evaporator coil, or thermostat malfunction. A clogged defrost drain causes ice buildup. A faulty compressor stops the cooling cycle. Without cooling, food spoils within hours.
Gas Range Won't Ignite
Ignition module failure, spark electrode fouling, or safety valve malfunction. GE gas ranges use electronic ignition. A failed module stops sparks. Fouled electrodes (from spilled food or grease) prevent the spark from jumping.
Dishwasher Not Cleaning Properly
Clogged spray arm, worn wash pump, failed detergent dispenser, or clogged filter. Mineral-heavy water clogs the spray arm ports. A worn pump delivers insufficient water pressure. A failed dispenser leaves detergent in the reservoir.
Dryer Not Heating or Drying Slowly
Thermal fuse blown, heating element failed, or clogged exhaust vent. The thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the dryer overheats. A clogged vent restricts airflow, causing heat buildup.
Ice Maker Not Working
Water inlet valve stuck, ice mold heater failure, or control arm jam. GE ice makers are reliable, but mineral deposits in the water supply can freeze the valve closed. A broken heater can't warm the mold to release ice cubes.
Oven Won't Heat or Heats Unevenly
Heating element failure, thermostat drift, or control board fault. GE ovens often fail on one heating element -- the bake element or broil element. Temperature swings happen when the thermostat loses calibration.
Washing Machine Leaking
