Miele ovens are generous with messages. Some report a fault. Some report a setting. A few report the oven protecting itself. Telling them apart is the first job, because several of them need no repair at all.
National Appliance Repairs works on Miele ovens and steam ovens in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. This guide is built on the fault and message pages Miele Australia publishes.
Messages that are not faults
Start here. These appear in Miele’s own list of display messages, and none of them means something has broken.
Demo mode activated. Appliance does not heat up. Exactly what it says. The oven is in showroom mode: lights, display and buttons all work, and nothing heats. Ex-display ovens are sometimes installed with it still on, and it can be switched on by accident in the settings menu. Your operating instructions show how to switch it off for your model. It is the Miele equivalent of the Samsung fridge OF OF mode, and it catches people out in the same way.
Max. operating time reached. A safety feature. If the oven has been running for a very long period, it switches itself off. Switch it back on and restart the program.
Energy-saving phase, or EC. The oven has dimmed or paused its display to save power.
Descale the appliance. On steam ovens, a maintenance prompt. Run the descaling program as your instructions describe, using the recommended tablets.
The fault codes Miele publishes
| Code | Appliance | What Miele says | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| F44 | Oven | A technical fault | Switch off at the circuit breaker for 20 seconds, then back on |
| F14, with water inlet symbol | Steam oven | Too little water is getting into the steam generator | Switch off and back on. If it returns, switch off and contact service |
| F23, F32, F33, F38, F54, F55, F60, F134 | Oven | Listed in Miele’s fault messages | Note the code, power cycle once, then book |
Miele’s list of oven fault messages is long. Most of the numbered codes are technician faults, and Miele’s general instruction for them is the same: reset once, and if the code returns, contact service.

F44: reset properly
Miele’s guidance for F44 is specific. Disconnect the oven from the power supply for 20 seconds, using the circuit breaker. Switching it off at the control panel is not the same thing, because the electronics stay powered.
Built-in ovens are usually hardwired, so the circuit breaker in your switchboard is the only practical way to cut power. Look for a breaker labelled for the oven or the kitchen.
If F44 returns after a proper reset, Miele’s instruction is to contact service.
Steam oven F14: water not reaching the generator
On a Miele steam oven, F14 shown with the water inlet symbol means too little water is getting into the steam generator. Miele’s steps are to switch the oven off and back on. If the message appears again, switch off and contact service.
Before you call, check the obvious parts of the water path:
- On models with a water container, check it is filled and pushed fully home. A container that is not seated properly cannot feed the generator.
- On plumbed models, check the water supply to the oven is turned on.
- Check when the oven was last descaled. Scale in the water system restricts flow, and in hard water areas it builds quickly.
Why the oven isn’t heating
If your Miele oven powers on but stays cold, work through these in order:
- Look for Demo mode on the display. It is the most common no-fault cause.
- Check a program and temperature are actually selected, and that the timer has not finished.
- Check the circuit breaker. A partially tripped supply can power the display but not the elements.
- Note any F code and do the 20-second breaker reset.
If it still will not heat, the element, its control or the temperature sensor needs testing. If it heats but the temperature seems wrong, our guide to testing oven temperature accuracy explains how to check it with a thermometer.
When to book
Book on any F code that returns after a 20-second breaker reset, on a steam oven F14 that comes back after a restart, on an oven that will not heat with Demo mode off, and on any burning smell.

Frequently asked questions
What does F44 mean on a Miele oven?
Miele describes it as a technical fault. Switch the oven off at the circuit breaker for 20 seconds, then back on. If F44 returns, contact service.
Why does my Miele oven light up but not heat?
Check for Demo mode first. Miele’s message reads “Demo mode activated. Appliance does not heat up”. Switch it off in the settings as your operating instructions describe.
What does F14 mean on a Miele steam oven?
Too little water is reaching the steam generator. Check the water container or supply, switch off and on, and contact service if it returns.
Why did my Miele oven switch itself off?
If the message reads “Max. operating time reached”, it is a safety feature after a long period of operation. Switch it back on and restart the program.
Do I reset a Miele oven at the panel or the breaker?
For fault codes like F44, Miele says to disconnect power for 20 seconds at the circuit breaker.
The short version
Not every Miele message is a fault. Demo mode, maximum operating time, energy saving and descaling prompts are all the oven doing what it was designed to do. For F44, reset at the circuit breaker for 20 seconds. For steam oven F14, check the water supply and restart once.
Anything that returns after a proper reset needs a technician. National Appliance Repairs works on Miele ovens across five capitals with upfront quoting. Book online or call your nearest office.
