Liebherr fridges and freezers say a lot through a small display. A flashing number, a row of dashes, a letter where the temperature should be. Some of it is a fault. A surprising amount of it is the appliance reporting a temperature it is still working to reach.
Liebherr’s user guides explain each one. National Appliance Repairs services Liebherr refrigeration across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
What the display is telling you
| What you see | What Liebherr says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| F0 to F9, or FE | A malfunction | Contact customer service |
| DEMO, or a D on newer displays | Demo mode is active and refrigeration is switched off | Deactivate demo mode |
| Flashing dashes on the freezer display | The freezer temperature is above 0°C | Find out why it warmed |
| The freezer temperature flashing | The setting was just changed, the appliance isn’t cold enough yet after switch-on, or the temperature has risen by several degrees | Usually wait; investigate if it doesn’t settle |
| Power failure symbol flashing | Listed by Liebherr with the malfunction displays. It commonly follows a power interruption | Check the food and the power supply; if it persists, contact service |
F0 to F9: a fault code
Liebherr’s guides list the codes F0 to F9 and FE as malfunctions, and the instruction for all of them is the same: contact customer service.
Liebherr does not publish what each individual number means for owners. The number tells a technician which part of the system has reported a fault before they arrive, so write it down exactly, along with the model and serial number from the rating label inside the cabinet.
Before you call, two checks are worth making:
- Power cycle once. Switch the appliance off at the wall, wait a few minutes, and switch it back on. If the code returns, it is not a passing glitch.
- Check the food. If the fault has stopped the cooling, temperatures may already be climbing. Food Standards Australia New Zealand identifies 5°C to 60°C as the range where food-poisoning bacteria multiply.
DEMO: the fridge isn’t broken
This is the one that sends people looking for a technician when they don’t need one.
Liebherr describes demo mode as a feature for dealers who want to demonstrate the appliance. When demo mode is active, all refrigeration functions are switched off. The lights work and the display works, so the fridge looks alive, and nothing gets cold.
Older Liebherr models show DEMO in the temperature display. Newer models show a D in the status display.
- On newer models, demo mode can be switched off in the settings menu. Your user guide shows the steps for your model, and some models show a countdown while it is deactivating.
- On older models, Liebherr’s guide directs owners to contact customer service to deactivate it.
Ex-display appliances are the usual culprit. It is the Liebherr equivalent of the Samsung OF OF mode, and it catches people out the same way.
Flashing dashes and a flashing temperature
Flashing dashes on the freezer display mean the freezer is above 0°C. That is a reading, not a fault code, but it is worth taking seriously, because a freezer should be well below zero.
Common reasons:
- The appliance has just been switched on and hasn’t reached temperature yet.
- A large amount of unfrozen food has just gone in.
- The door has been left open, or is not sealing.
- There has been a power failure.
A flashing temperature works the same way. Liebherr lists three causes: the setting was just changed, the appliance isn’t cold enough yet after being switched on, or the temperature has risen by several degrees. In the first two cases, give it time. In the third, find out why.
Liebherr’s guides also note that the display can show the warmest temperature reached while the appliance was warming, so you can judge how far it climbed before you decide what food to keep.

If it’s warm and there’s no code
Work through the basics:
- Check the door is closing and the seal is clean and intact. A seal that has come away from the door lets warm air in continuously.
- Check the vents inside aren’t blocked by food packed against them.
- Check the appliance has room to breathe. Built-in Liebherr models depend on the ventilation set out in their installation instructions.
- Check demo mode is off.

Frequently asked questions
What do F codes mean on a Liebherr fridge?
Liebherr lists F0 to F9 and FE as malfunctions. Note the code and contact service. Liebherr does not publish individual meanings for owners.
Why does my Liebherr fridge say DEMO?
Demo mode is active, and Liebherr says all refrigeration is switched off in that mode. Newer models can switch it off in the settings menu. On older models, Liebherr directs you to customer service.
What do flashing dashes mean on a Liebherr freezer?
The freezer temperature is above 0°C. Check the door, the seal and whether warm food has just been loaded.
Why is the temperature flashing on my Liebherr?
Usually because the setting was just changed or the appliance hasn’t reached temperature yet. If it has risen by several degrees with no obvious reason, investigate.
Is a D on the display the same as DEMO?
Yes. Newer Liebherr models show D in the status display for demo mode.
The short version
On a Liebherr, F0 to F9 and FE are faults for a technician. DEMO, or D, means refrigeration has been switched off on purpose. Flashing dashes and a flashing temperature are readings, not faults, and usually mean the appliance is still catching up.
