Miele heat pump dryers do not throw many fault codes. Most of what they display are maintenance messages, and most of those come down to fluff and water: where it has collected, and whether it can still get out.
Miele’s operating instructions cover each one. National Appliance Repairs services Miele dryers in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
How a heat pump dryer differs
A heat pump dryer does not vent hot air outside. It circulates air through the drum and across a heat exchanger, where moisture condenses out and collects as water. Miele’s instructions describe the refrigerant running in a closed circuit through that heat exchanger unit.
Two things follow from that design. The airflow path has to stay clear of fluff, because the heat exchanger cannot work if air cannot reach it. And the condensed water has to go somewhere, either into a container you empty or down a drain hose.
The messages
| Message or indicator | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Empty the container | The condensed water container is full | Empty it and refit it |
| Empty the container, check the drain hose | On plumbed-in dryers, the water isn’t draining away | Check the drain hose |
| Clean the airways, or the airways indicator | Fluff is restricting airflow | Clean the fluff filters, plinth filter and the airways |
| Same message ends the program again after cleaning | Miele treats this as a fault | Contact service |
Empty the container
Miele’s instruction is to empty the condensed water container after every drying program, not just when the message appears. When it reaches its maximum level, the message lights up.
A few points from Miele’s instructions:
- Close the door completely before removing the container. Miele warns that the door and fascia panel can be damaged otherwise.
- Hold the container level by the front panel and the back, so water does not run out.
- Do not drink the condensed water.
- On models with a steam program, the container must hold at least a minimum amount of water for that program to work, so check your instructions before emptying it completely.
If your dryer is plumbed to a drain and still asks you to empty the container, check that the drain hose is not kinked, blocked or lifted too high.
Clean the airways
This is the message that causes the most confusion, because it often comes back after people think they have cleaned everything.
Miele’s instructions describe three places to clean, not one:
- The fluff filters in the door opening.
- The plinth filter behind the panel at the bottom front of the dryer.
- The airways themselves: the area underneath the plinth filter and the heat exchanger.
The plinth filter and the space beneath it are the parts most often missed. Cleaning only the door filters will not clear an airways message for long.
Once everything is clean, switching the dryer off and on again clears the message. Some models also let you change when the airways indicator comes on, through the programmable functions in the settings.
Clean gently
The heat exchanger has thin metal fins that bend easily, and bent fins block airflow for good. Clean as your instructions describe, without stiff brushes, compressed air, or anything sharp.

When it is a fault
Miele draws a clear line here. If a program ends again with the same message after you have cleaned the filters and airways and restarted the dryer, Miele’s instructions say there is a fault, and to contact service.
The same applies to anything that involves the heat pump circuit. The refrigerant system is sealed and is not something to open, top up or test yourself.
Signs it needs a technician:
- The airways message returns immediately after a thorough clean.
- The dryer runs for hours and the clothes stay damp, with every filter clean.
- The condensed water container stays empty after a full load, meaning no water is being collected.
- You can hear the dryer running but the drum is not turning.

Frequently asked questions
What does “Clean the airways” mean on a Miele dryer?
Fluff is restricting the airflow. Clean the fluff filters, the plinth filter, and the area beneath the plinth filter and the heat exchanger, then switch the dryer off and on.
Why does “Clean the airways” keep coming back?
Usually because the plinth filter or the airways beneath it were missed. If the message ends the program again after everything is clean, Miele treats it as a fault.
How often should I empty the Miele dryer container?
After every drying program, according to Miele’s instructions.
Can I plumb a Miele dryer to a drain?
Many models can be connected to a drain hose. If the dryer still asks you to empty the container, check that hose is not kinked or blocked.
Can I clean the heat exchanger myself?
Clean the accessible parts as your instructions describe, gently, without bending the fins. The sealed heat pump circuit is not user-serviceable.
The short version
Most Miele heat pump dryer messages are about fluff and water. Empty the container after every load. When “Clean the airways” appears, clean all three places: the door filters, the plinth filter and the airways beneath it.
If the same message ends the program again after a proper clean, Miele says it is a fault. National Appliance Repairs services Miele dryers across five capitals with upfront quoting. Book online or call your nearest office.
