Your Miele dishwasher has stopped at the start of a program, the display shows F13 or F12, and the machine has done nothing useful. No water, no wash, often a drain pump running briefly.
These are water intake faults. The dishwasher asked for water and did not get enough of it. In most cases the cause sits outside the machine, and Miele publishes the fix. National Appliance Repairs works on Miele dishwashers in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
What Miele says F13 means
Miele Australia’s own support guidance is direct: F13 means the water inlet is blocked or restricted. The first cause Miele lists is the simplest one: the stopcock, meaning the isolation tap under the sink, is not open.
F12 sits in the same family. Repair references consistently describe it as a water intake fault detected at the start of the fill step, where F13 is reported at the end of it. In practice the checks are the same, and you start in the same place.
Some Miele models show no number at all. Depending on the generation, the display may read a water inlet message, or an indicator light marked for intake and drain may flash. Treat those the same way.
The checks, in order
- Open the stopcock fully. Plumbing work, a cupboard clear-out, or a well-meaning visitor can leave the tap closed or only partly open. Miele lists this first because it is the most common cause.
- Check the rest of the house has water. If the kitchen tap is weak too, the problem is the supply, not the dishwasher.
- Check the inlet hose for kinks. Look behind and under the cabinetry, especially if the dishwasher was recently pulled out.
- Clean the filter in the screw connection. Miele’s guidance is to turn off the stopcock, unscrew the inlet hose connection, and remove the seal from the screw connection to reach the small filter behind it. Clean it, refit it, and reconnect firmly. That filter catches sediment and scale before it reaches the machine, and in hard water areas it fills faster than people expect.
- Restart the program. If the fault clears and stays clear, you have found it.
Turn the water off before unscrewing anything. Have a towel and a shallow tray ready, because there will be water in the hose.
What each code points to
| Code | What it reports | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| F13 | Water inlet blocked or restricted, per Miele | Stopcock, then the inlet filter |
| F12 | Water intake fault at the start of the fill step | Same checks as F13 |
| F11 | Drainage fault, a different problem | The drain filter and drain hose |
| F70 | Waterproof System, water in the base tray | Close the stopcock and call |
| F14 | Reported inconsistently across sources | Ask a technician to confirm |
F14 deserves a note. Repair references disagree about it, variously describing it as a pressure switch fault, a heating fault and an intake timeout. Miele does not publish a consumer explanation for it. If your dishwasher shows F14, do not order a part against an online table: have it diagnosed.

Why Australian water makes this more likely
The inlet filter exists to stop grit and mineral particles reaching the dishwasher’s valve. In hard water areas, scale accumulates there over time, and a filter that has not been looked at in years can restrict flow enough to trigger an intake fault on its own.
If you are in a hard water area, checking that filter once a year is a small job that prevents a common call. Our guide to how Australian water and climate wear out appliances covers where that matters most.
The same filter design appears on Miele washing machines, where the equivalent intake code is F10. Our guide to Miele washing machine F10 and F11 errors covers that side.
When the water supply is fine
If the stopcock is fully open, the house has good pressure, the hose is straight and the filter is clean, the fault is inside the machine. The usual candidates are the water inlet valve, the flow meter that counts incoming water, and the Waterproof System valve at the tap end of the hose on models that have one.
Those need testing with the machine pulled out. They sit alongside water and mains wiring, so this is a technician job.
Not to be confused with drainage
F11 and F13 get mixed up because both stop a program early. They point in opposite directions. F13 is water not getting in. F11 is water not getting out. Our guide to the Miele dishwasher F11 error covers the drainage side, and if you ever see water in the base of the machine, the Miele F70 error is the one to read.

Frequently asked questions
What does F13 mean on a Miele dishwasher?
Miele describes it as a blocked or restricted water inlet. Check that the stopcock is fully open, then clean the filter in the inlet hose’s screw connection.
What does F12 mean on a Miele dishwasher?
It is a water intake fault, reported at the start of the fill step. The checks are the same as for F13: tap, hose, inlet filter.
Can I fix a Miele F13 myself?
Often, yes. An open stopcock and a clean inlet filter resolve most of them. If the supply is good and the code persists, the inlet valve or flow meter needs testing.
What does F14 mean on a Miele dishwasher?
Sources disagree, and Miele does not publish a consumer explanation. Have it diagnosed by a technician before ordering any part.
Is F13 the same as F11?
No. F13 is water not getting into the dishwasher. F11 is water not draining out of it.
The short version
F13 and F12 mean the dishwasher could not get the water it asked for. Open the stopcock fully, straighten the hose, and clean the small filter in the inlet connection. That resolves most of them at no cost.
If the code survives a good supply and a clean filter, the inlet valve or flow meter is next, and that is a job for a technician. National Appliance Repairs works on Miele dishwashers across five capitals with upfront quoting. Book online or call your nearest office.
