The same dishwasher, same brand, same model, same year of manufacture, fails differently in Adelaide than it does in Melbourne. A rangehood in Bondi corrodes on a timeline a rangehood in Blacktown never sees. And a condenser dryer that performs perfectly through a Melbourne winter can struggle badly through a Brisbane February.
None of that is in the manufacturer’s warranty documentation, but it shows up constantly in the service history. Here’s what local conditions do to household appliances, and what’s worth doing about it.
Water Hardness: The Biggest Regional Variable
Water hardness measures dissolved calcium and magnesium, expressed as milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate. It’s not a health issue. Every Australian capital’s supply is safe to drink at whatever hardness it runs at. The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines treat 200 mg/L as an aesthetic guideline specifically to limit scale build-up in hot water systems, not as a health limit.
For appliances, though, it’s the single most consequential difference between one Australian city and another. The guidelines note that hardness across major Australian reticulated supplies ranges from roughly 5 mg/L to around 380 mg/L, which is a spread of more than seventy-fold within one country.

Broadly, Melbourne and Sydney draw from protected surface catchments and sit firmly in the soft category. Adelaide draws heavily from the River Murray, which picks up minerals across hundreds of kilometres of calcareous country, and sits in the moderately hard band. Perth draws a large share of its supply from limestone aquifers including the Gnangara Mound, and hardness varies enormously by suburb, with northern zones running considerably harder than the hills to the south and east. Brisbane sits between, with meaningful variation by supply zone.
Those are generalisations, and hardness varies by supply zone within every city. Your water utility publishes zone-level figures: SA Water, Water Corporation, Sydney Water, Melbourne’s retail water companies and Seqwater all report hardness in their annual drinking water quality reporting. What Scale Does Inside an Appliance
Calcium carbonate comes out of solution when water is heated. It deposits on the hottest surface available, which in a household appliance is always the heating element. From there it does three things: it insulates, it accumulates, and it eventually blocks.
Scale rarely announces itself as a breakdown. It shows up first as performance drift, and the signs are consistent across appliances:
- Cycles that take noticeably longer than they used to
- White or grey chalky deposits on elements, spray arms or the kettle base
- Cloudy glassware and spotting that returns no matter how much detergent you add
- Weakening water pressure or flow in a coffee machine
- Water that never seems to get as hot as it once did
Any two of those together in a hard-water suburb point at scale rather than a component fault.
Dishwashers
Scale on a dishwasher’s heating element is the classic hard-water fault, and it presents as poor performance long before it presents as a breakdown. A scaled element transfers heat less efficiently, so the wash water doesn’t reach temperature, so detergent doesn’t activate properly, so dishes come out with a film on them. Owners typically respond by adding more detergent, which does nothing for the underlying problem.
The second symptom is cloudy glassware, which people usually blame on the machine. In hard-water areas it’s more often mineral deposition. The tell is whether the cloudiness rinses off with a weak acid such as white vinegar. If it does, it’s scale. If it doesn’t, the glass is etched and that’s permanent.
Most dishwashers sold in Australia have a built-in water softener with a salt reservoir. In Adelaide and much of Perth, that reservoir needs to actually be filled with dishwasher salt and set to the right hardness level for the local water. Washing Machines
Washing machines suffer less dramatically because most washing happens at lower temperatures, but the effect is cumulative. Scale builds on the element in machines that have one, and combines with detergent residue and body oils to form deposits in the drum outer, the sump and the hoses.
The visible outcome is usually smell rather than failure. Scale gives residue somewhere to anchor, which is why hard-water households report musty machines more often. Hard water also reduces detergent effectiveness. Calcium and magnesium ions bind with surfactants before they can lift soil from fabric, which is why the same dose of detergent does less work in Adelaide than in Melbourne.
Coffee Machines and Kettles
Automatic coffee machines are the appliance where hardness does the most damage per dollar, because the boiler and the thermoblock run hot, run often, and have narrow passages that block completely rather than gradually.
A machine in a hard-water household that isn’t descaled on schedule will typically show weakening pressure, a slower flow rate and an eventual failure to heat. By the time the machine won’t produce a shot, the scale is usually well past the point where a descale solves it. Manufacturers set descaling intervals assuming average water. The Same Logic Applies to Anything With an Element
Kettles, steam ovens, ice makers with a plumbed water line, and fridges with a chilled water dispenser and filter all show the same pattern. The heating or cooling surface scales, performance degrades gradually, and the owner attributes it to age.
Humidity and Appliance Performance
Brisbane’s summer, and the wet season further north, put appliances in conditions the specification sheet quietly assumes away.
Condenser and heat pump dryers work by cooling humid air to condense moisture out of it. When the ambient air in the laundry is already at 80% relative humidity and 30°C, the temperature differential the machine relies on shrinks, and drying times stretch. Owners read this as a fault. It usually isn’t. What is a fault is a blocked condenser unit, which produces the same symptom and is a genuine maintenance failure. In humid climates the condenser filter needs cleaning far more often than the manual suggests.
Vented dryers discharge warm, wet air. In a small, closed Queensland laundry that air has nowhere to go, which raises the humidity the dryer is drawing from and makes the machine work harder. It also creates the conditions for mould behind and beneath the appliance. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office notes that ducting which is too long or has too many bends accumulates lint and makes a dryer take much longer than it should, and that lint build-up raises drum temperature enough to create a fire risk. In humid conditions, damp lint compacts faster.
Fridges run harder in humid heat because the condenser has to reject heat into warmer air, and because door seals face a bigger moisture gradient. Condensation forming around the door frame in summer is normal on many models. Water pooling inside the cabinet is not, and usually means a blocked defrost drain.
Electronics are the quiet casualty. Control boards in humid coastal and subtropical environments accumulate moisture and dust on the board surface, which over years contributes to corrosion at solder joints and connectors. It’s a slow failure mode, and it’s part of why identical appliances have shorter electronic lifespans in Brisbane than in Adelaide.
Salt Air on the Coast
Australia is one of the most coastally concentrated populations in the world, which means an unusually large share of our appliances live within a few kilometres of surf.
Airborne salt is hygroscopic. It attracts and holds moisture against whatever surface it lands on, which turns an occasional wetting into permanent damp contact. Three consequences show up on service calls.
Stainless steel corrodes. Stainless resists corrosion through a passive chromium oxide layer, and chloride ions attack that layer directly. The result is tea staining, the light brown discolouration common on coastal appliance fronts, rangehoods and outdoor kitchens. Early on it’s cosmetic and removable. Left long enough it becomes pitting. Lower grades of stainless corrode faster, which is why two appliances side by side can behave very differently.
Rangehood motors fail early. A rangehood sits in the path of both cooking grease and salt-laden air drawn through the kitchen. Control boards fail from the connectors inward. Salt deposits on a circuit board create conductive bridges under humid conditions. The failure usually starts at connector pins and ribbon cable terminations rather than the components themselves, which is why board faults in coastal properties are often intermittent before they become permanent.
The practical response is unglamorous: wipe down stainless surfaces regularly with fresh water and dry them, and keep rangehood filters clean so the motor isn’t fighting grease as well as salt.
Soft Water Isn’t a Free Pass
Melbourne’s water is among the softest in the country, and it removes scale from the list of concerns almost entirely. Sydney is comfortably soft as well.
What soft water doesn’t do is prevent detergent residue. With no mineral load to consume surfactant, the same dose of detergent produces more foam and more residue, and over-dosing is common. The other soft-water reality is that Melbourne and Sydney appliances get a mechanical life rather than a chemical one. Bearings, motors and boards decide when they die, not scale. That’s worth knowing when you’re weighing a repair, because a fifteen-year-old dishwasher in Melbourne may have far more life in it than the same machine would in Adelaide.

Just one thing: if you’re planning on getting whole-house water softeners in an area with hard supply zones – such as Perth – it’s an investment that’s going to pay off quite well in the long run. However, in Melbourne or Sydney, they solve a problem you don’t have. Get your zone’s hardness figure from your utility before spending anything.
