A Miele washing machine with its door locked and your clothes inside is stressful. The instinct is to pull harder. Don’t.

In most cases the door is locked on purpose, and Miele tells you why. Two fault codes, F34 and F35, cover the cases where it is not. National Appliance Repairs works on Miele washing machines across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

First: is it locked on purpose?

Miele’s operating instructions list several reasons the door stays shut that are not faults at all.

What’s happeningWhy the door stays lockedWhat to do
A program is runningThe drum is locked during a programCancel the program. The door releases
Water is still in the drumThe machine cannot drainClean the drain filter and drain pump
The water is too hotScald protection above 55°CWait for the temperature to drop
Message reads Door release fault, F35The door lock has jammedContact service

That 55°C rule is worth knowing. Miele will not let the door open while the wash water is hotter than that, to protect you from scalding. After a hot cancelled program, waiting is the fix.

Water in the drum: the most common reason

If the program stopped with water still inside, the door will not release until the drum is empty. That usually means a drainage problem, and on Miele machines that is typically F11.

Miele’s operating instructions include a section on opening the door in the event of a blocked drain or a power cut. It covers draining the remaining water through the drain filter at the bottom front of the machine and cleaning the drain pump. Follow the steps for your model, have towels and a shallow tray ready, and expect more water than you think.

Our guide to Miele washing machine F10 and F11 errors covers the drainage checks in detail.

F34: the door will not lock

F34 is the opposite problem, and it is the one most online guides get backwards. Miele Australia describes F34 as the door could not be locked. Depending on the model, the display may instead read “Door lock, call Customer Service” or “The door will not lock. Call Customer Service”.

Miele lists two causes:

  1. The drum has been overloaded. Check the maximum load for the program in your operating instructions, remove some items, then switch the machine off and back on.
  2. A technical fault. Disconnect the machine from power by switching off at the wall and withdrawing the plug, or by switching off its circuit. Wait at least two minutes, reconnect, and switch it on again.

If F34 persists after both, Miele’s instruction is to contact service.

Before calling, check nothing is caught in the door seal or the latch. A drawstring or a sleeve trapped at the edge stops the door seating properly.

F35: the door will not release

F35 is the door release fault. The lock has jammed in the locked position. Unlike the deliberate locks above, waiting and cancelling will not clear it.

This is a service call. Do not lever the door or force the handle. Miele door handles and hinges are built well, but they are not built for that, and a broken handle turns a door lock replacement into a bigger job.

A quick sequence to try

  1. Cancel the program if one is running.
  2. Wait if the machine has been washing hot.
  3. Check for water in the drum. If there is some, follow your manual’s emergency draining steps.
  4. For F34, reduce the load and power cycle, then do the two-minute disconnection.
  5. For F35, stop and book.

When to book

Book on F35, on F34 that survives a lighter load and a two-minute disconnection, and on a door that stays locked with an empty, cool drum and no program running.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my Miele washing machine door open?

Usually because a program is still running, there is water in the drum, or the water is hotter than 55°C. Miele locks the door in all three cases. F35 means the lock itself has jammed.

What does F34 mean on a Miele washing machine?

Miele describes it as the door not being able to lock. Check the drum is not overloaded, then disconnect power for at least two minutes and switch it back on.

What does F35 mean on a Miele washing machine?

A door release fault: the lock has jammed. Contact service and do not force the door.

How long do I wait for the door to release after a hot wash?

Until the water temperature drops below 55°C and the indicator goes out. Miele uses that limit to protect against scalding.

Can I open a Miele door during a power cut?

Miele’s operating instructions describe the procedure for opening the door after a power cut or a blocked drain. Follow the steps for your model.

The short version

A locked Miele door is usually doing its job: a running program, water in the drum, or water above 55°C. Cancel, drain or wait. F34 means the door could not lock, so lighten the load and disconnect the power for two minutes.

F35 means the lock has jammed, and that needs a technician. National Appliance Repairs works on Miele washing machines across five capitals with upfront quoting. Book online or call your nearest office.
