A commercial refrigerator holding assorted drink products.

A Skope cabinet showing an alarm is a stock problem before it is an equipment problem. Skope puts it plainly in its own technicians’ documentation: any alarm that happens can result in warm product, and all of them are logged.

Some you can clear yourself. Some only a service technician can clear. National Appliance Repairs services Skope refrigeration across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

How the codes display

Cabinets running the SCS Connect electronic controller show an alarm symbol, then alternate between ALr and the alarm number on the display. Door alarms show as dor instead.

Write the number down. The number is the whole diagnosis.

The alarm codes

CodeWhat it means
dorThe door has been open for several minutes
ALr2 / ALr3Over or under voltage protection. Mains supply outside the allowable range, cabinet has temporarily shut down and restarts once supply returns to normal
ALr8Estimated product temperature below allowable range. Causes include an empty or partly filled cabinet, or low ambient temperature
ALr9Estimated product temperature above allowable range. Causes include excessive door openings, a door left open, or warm product loaded in
ALr14High condensing temperature protection. Temporarily shut down to prevent damage, often from high ambient temperature
ALr15Excessive condensing temperature protection. Shut down to prevent permanent damage
ALr17Control probe failure. A critical sensor has failed and the cabinet can no longer operate
ALr18Electrical over-current protection. The compressor was drawing too much current and shut down
ALr19Failed to reach set temperature. The system ran continuously for a long period without getting there
ALr20Over-cooling product. Internal temperature too low, temporarily shut down. Often follows a large set-temperature change
ALr21Excessive compressor cycling. The system is turning on and off too frequently
ALr22Evaporator fan over-current
ALr23Condenser fan over-current
ALr24Controller communication error
ALr25Controller update failure
ALr26Controller hardware failure
ALr27Probe failure, non-critical. The cabinet keeps running with partial function but needs service
ALr28No downward tendency. The temperature is no longer decreasing
ALr29Compressor cutting out on its internal protection or a pressure switch
ALr30Excessive automatic defrosting
ALr31Compressor stall on start-up

The ones your venue can act on

Four of these have causes sitting outside the cabinet, and they are worth checking before anyone books a service call.

  1. dor. Someone left the door open, a product is fouling the seal, or the door is not self-closing properly. Check the gasket for tears and flattened sections while you are there.
  2. ALr9. Excessive door openings during a rush, a door left open, or warm stock loaded straight in. If a delivery went in unchilled, the alarm is correct and the cabinet is catching up.
  3. ALr8 and ALr20. The cabinet is too cold. An empty or lightly loaded cabinet, a cold ambient overnight, or somebody adjusting the set point a long way in one move. Check what the controller is set to.
  4. ALr14 and ALr15. High condensing temperature. Overwhelmingly the most common cause in Australian venues is a condenser choked with dust and kitchen grease, followed by a cabinet pushed too close to a wall, sited next to a cooking line, or in a room with poor ventilation. Clean the condenser and give it air.

That last one deserves emphasis. A condenser cleaned on a schedule prevents ALr14, ALr15, ALr19, ALr21 and eventually the compressor failure that follows them. It is the single highest-value maintenance task on any commercial fridge, and it takes minutes.

The ones that need a technician

ALr17 stops the cabinet entirely, and ALr26 means the controller itself has failed. ALr18, ALr29 and ALr31 are all compressor-related and point at the sealed system or electrical supply. ALr22 and ALr23 are fan motors drawing too much current, usually because a bearing is failing or the blade is obstructed.

ALr19 and ALr28 are the two worth treating as urgent even though the cabinet is still running. Both mean the refrigeration system is working and achieving nothing, which is the pattern that precedes losing product overnight.

ALr2 and ALr3 are voltage alarms. If they recur, the problem is the supply, not the fridge, and an electrician is the right call.

Why the logging matters

Every alarm is recorded, with a history for each component, and SCS Connect controllers store recent operating data that a technician can review to spot intermittent faults and trends.

For a venue, that has a practical use beyond repairs. If you have to demonstrate that stock was held at temperature, or explain a period when it was not, the cabinet holds the record. Ask for it to be pulled during a service visit and keep it with your food safety documentation.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand identifies 5°C to 60°C as the range where food-poisoning bacteria multiply, with a safe window of generally less than four hours in total. A cabinet that has been sitting on ALr9 or ALr19 overnight has a stock decision attached, not just a repair.

When to book

Book on ALr17, ALr26, or any compressor alarm. Book on ALr19 or ALr28 the same day. Book if a high condensing alarm returns after the condenser has been cleaned, or if any alarm repeats within a week.

Our commercial fridge repairs and commercial freezer and blast chiller service cover Skope across all five capitals, with priority scheduling for urgent commercial breakdowns, planned preventative maintenance built around your equipment, and service reports with job photography for your records. Frequently asked questions

What does ALr mean on a Skope fridge?

It is the alarm prefix. The display alternates between ALr and the alarm number, and that number identifies the fault.

What does ALr14 mean on a Skope cabinet?

High condensing temperature protection. The system was running hot and shut down temporarily to prevent damage. A dirty condenser or high ambient temperature is the usual cause.

Can staff clear Skope alarms themselves?

Some. Door alarms, temperature alarms caused by loading or door openings, and condensing alarms caused by a dirty condenser can all be resolved on site. Probe, controller and compressor alarms need a technician.

Why does my Skope fridge keep showing a high temperature alarm?

Most often a condenser blocked with dust and grease, or the cabinet sited somewhere with poor airflow. If it persists after cleaning, the fan, the probe or the sealed system needs testing.

Does a Skope fridge keep a record of alarms?

Yes. Alarms are logged with a history per component, and recent operating data is stored in the controller. A technician can pull it during a service visit.

The short version

Skope alarms name the fault precisely, and roughly a third of them have causes sitting outside the cabinet: doors, loading, ambient temperature and a dirty condenser. Those four are worth checking before anyone is called.

The rest are probes, controllers, fans and compressors, and ALr19 and ALr28 are the two to treat as urgent even while the cabinet is still humming away. National Appliance Repairs services Skope refrigeration nationally and offers preventative maintenance programs built around condenser servicing.
