Er FF on an LG fridge points at the freezer evaporator fan. That fan moves cold air off the evaporator coil and into both compartments, so when it stops, the freezer loses circulation and the fresh food side warms up behind it.
The part most guides get wrong is what to do next. Replacing the fan is often the wrong first move. National Appliance Repairs technicians see Er FF across LG fridges and freezers in all five capitals, and the pattern is consistent enough to be worth explaining properly.
What Er FF means
LG names components in its fridge codes instead of using numbers. FF is the freezer fan. When the control board stops receiving the expected feedback from that fan motor, Er FF appears.
Two things produce that result:
- The blade is jammed: Ice built up around the fan housing physically stops it turning. This is the common one.
- The motor has failed: An open circuit in the fan motor winding, or a wiring fault back to the board.
You can often tell which by listening. A humming or grinding noise from the freezer before the code appeared suggests a motor straining against ice. Complete silence suggests the motor has stopped altogether.
The LG fan and defrost code family
LG’s codes in this group are easy to confuse with each other because the symptoms overlap. Knowing which one you have saves a wasted parts order.
| Code | Component | Typical symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Er FF | Freezer evaporator fan | Freezer warming, frost on food packages, no airflow noise |
| Er dH | Defrost system | Heavy ice on the evaporator, cooling fades over days, not hours |
| Er IF | Ice maker fan | Ice production drops or stops; cabinet temperatures may look normal |
| Er CF | Condenser fan | Compressor runs hot, poor cooling in both compartments |
If you have seen more than one of these in sequence, that ordering is informative. Er FF followed later by Er dH is a classic progression, and it tells you the defrost system was the underlying problem the whole time.
Why Er FF comes back after you defrost it
Here is the part that frustrates people. A manual defrost clears the ice, the fan spins again, the code goes away, and three weeks later it is back.
The evaporator in your fridge frosts up during normal operation. A defrost heater melts that frost on a schedule, and the meltwater drains away. When the defrost heater, defrost sensor or control relay fails, nothing clears the frost. It accumulates, builds outward, and eventually reaches the fan blade.
At that point the fridge reports Er FF, because the fan has stopped. But the fan was never the fault. It was the last component to be affected.
Defrosting manually removes the ice without touching the cause. The ice comes back on the same schedule it did before, and so does the code. This is why our technicians test the defrost heater and sensor before quoting a fan motor. A fan replacement on a fridge with a dead defrost heater is money spent twice.
What you can safely try
- Power reset: Unplug the fridge at the wall for five minutes, then restore power. A momentary read error will clear and stay gone.
- Check the door seals: A door that does not seal draws humid air into the cabinet continuously, and humid air is what becomes ice. Check the gasket for tears, gaps and residue, and check the fridge is sitting level, because an out-of-level cabinet can hold a door fractionally open.
- Manual defrost: Empty the freezer, switch the fridge off at the wall, put towels down and leave the doors open until everything has thawed and the interior is dry. Allow several hours. A fan blowing room air in speeds it up. Do not use a heat gun, hair dryer or sharp tool near the evaporator, because the coil and its fins are easily punctured and the refrigerant inside is under pressure.
- Restore power and watch: Note the date. If Er FF returns within a month, the defrost circuit is the problem.
Anything past this point means removing the freezer rear panel, which puts you in contact with the evaporator, the defrost heater and mains wiring. That is technician work.
Protect the food first
An LG fridge with a failed freezer fan loses both compartments, not just one, because the freezer supplies the cold air for both. Food Standards Australia New Zealand identifies 5°C to 60°C as the range in which food-poisoning bacteria multiply, and puts the total safe window at generally less than four hours.
Move perishables to an esky with ice bricks before starting a defrost, and discard anything from the fridge section that has been sitting warm. Frozen items that still have ice crystals through them can usually be refrozen; items that have thawed completely should not be.
When to book a technician
Book if the code returns after a defrost, if the freezer is silent, or if both compartments are now warm. Also book if you have seen Er dH at any point, because that names the defrost system directly.
Our fridge repair service covers LG models across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and freezer repairs sit alongside it for chest and upright units. Same-day appointments are available subject to availability, and every repair carries a 12-month parts warranty with a 3-month labour warranty.
Call your NAR’s local branch and tell the office you are seeing Er FF and whether it has come back after a defrost. That second detail changes which parts the technician brings.
If you are also dealing with codes on an LG washer, our guide to LG washing machine error codes covers that side of the range.
Frequently asked questions
What does Er FF mean on an LG fridge?
It is a freezer fan error. The evaporator fan that circulates cold air into both compartments has stopped, either because ice has jammed the blade or because the motor has failed.
Why does Er FF keep coming back after I defrost the fridge?
Because the defrost system is likely the underlying fault. If the defrost heater or sensor is not clearing frost on schedule, ice rebuilds around the fan and the code returns. Defrosting treats the symptom.
Can I still use my LG fridge with an Er FF error?
Not safely for food storage. The freezer fan supplies cold air to both compartments, so temperatures rise throughout the cabinet. Move perishables and book a repair.
Is Er FF the same as Er dH?
No. Er FF names the freezer fan; Er dH names the defrost system. They are frequently related, because a defrost failure is a common cause of the ice that stops the fan.
How long should I leave an LG fridge unplugged to defrost it?
Several hours at minimum, with the doors open and the freezer emptied. Ice behind the rear panel takes considerably longer to melt than the frost you can see.
The short version
Er FF names the freezer fan, and ice around the blade causes it more often than motor failure does. A manual defrost will clear the code. Whether it stays cleared tells you whether the defrost system underneath is healthy.
If it comes back, the fix is in the defrost circuit, not the fan. National Appliance Repairs diagnoses LG fridges across five capitals and quotes parts and labour upfront for your approval. Book online or call your nearest office with the code.
